The Bus Ride
It was December 1, 1955. After a long, hard day of work at the department store, Rosa Parks walked to the bus stop. As the bus started to fill up, white people started taking up the seats in front of Rosa Parks. Once the last empty seat was taken, the next white person who entered usually took the seat right behind the last white person's seat…even if a black person was already seated there. This was not in the law, but bus drivers still enforced it like it was a law. That day when the next white person did board, the bus driver ordered every black person in the next row to stand. Everyone stood… except Rosa Parks. The bus rider ordered her to stand up again. She stood her ground. She was arrested later but was released on bail.
